Study of the Relationship between Clinical and Psychosocial Factors, Recovery Attitude, and Social Adjustment in Adults with Mental Illness

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine structural relationship of variables of clinical factors(symptoms, insight) and psychosocial factors(empowerment, social support) on social adjustment with focused on the mediating effect of recovery attitude. This study identifies whether recovery attitude has mediating effects on the relationship between clinical factors, psychosocial factors and social adjustment among adults with mental illness. The sample consists of 373 adults with mental illness according to DSM-¥³ criteria in the Busan and Kyongnam regions. The measures use Social Adjustment Scale, Brief and feeling inventory, Schedule for assessing the three components of Insight, Empowerment Scale, Social support, Recovery Attitude Questionnaire. The study uses structural equation modeling for analyzing the constructed model. The major findings are as follows. First, insight, empowerment, and social support have a direct effect on social adjustment. Second, the results also suggest that recovery attitude has mediating effects in the relationship between psychosocial factors and social adjustment. Finally, the results are discussed in terms of practical implications for mental health social work, and are discussed research limitations in this paper.
